FOREST INVENTORY & PRECISION FOREST MANAGEMENT

 

Elevation models DSM and DTM provide high-resolution data sets for extracting:

  • canopy heights by subtracting DSM and DTM

  • single tree height by determining the local maxima of the canopy

  • 3D coordinates of the tree trunks and tree tops

 

 

 

 

Canopy and tree height, crown area, number of single stems and 3D coordinates of tree tops can be directly and automatically derived data.  Based on these parameters the diameter  at breast height (dbh), times volume, h/d proportion and increment can be accurately estimated.

   

Classifications of trees and forest stands to discriminate between:

  • broad-leaved trees and conifers by calculating the ratio of crown height and crown area

  • old growth and young growth

  • tree species by additionally using spectral image data RGB and CIR

 

Segmentation of single tree crowns within the canopy by:

  • using adjusted algorithms (e.g. pouring algorithm, raindrop model)
